Standardized Work Combination Table (SWCT)

"The standardized work combination table shows the combination of manual work time, walk time, and machine processing time for each operation in a production sequence. This form is a more precise process design tool than the Operator Balance Chart. It can be very helpful to identify the waste of waiting and overburden, and to confirm standard work―in―process.

The standardized work combination table is one of three basic forms for creating standardized work, along with the standardized work chart and job instruction sheet. The purpose of standardized work, according to Kaizen Express from which this form is taken, is to provide a basis for continuous improvement through kaizen."
(lean.org)
It is used as a tool to determine work load and work sequence in order to fit with the takt time limit. This table is very useful for workload balancing for each operator

1 sheet of SWCT is for 1 operator

Picture above is how to draw SWCT chart,
Vertical line in the end is Cycle Time of the operation
Vertical red line is Takt Time
Red arrow is waiting time
Curve is walk
Solid line is time for each work name

Production Capacity Sheet (PCS)

The Process Capacity Sheet is used to calculate the capacity of each machine in a production line to confirm maximum capacity and to identify and eliminate bottlenecks.
Processing capacity per shift will be calculated from the available production time, completion time, and tool-change time (and other factors as necessary) for each work piece.
Example of Production Capacity Sheet (from lean.org)

Basic calculation for each machine is
  • Basic Time (we called MCT = Machine Cycle Time)
MCT = HW + MT
HW = Hand Work, Unload or load in machine or operator movement that machine must stop
MT = Machine Time, Auto operation from switch on until finish
  • Tool Change
Change = Qty for change tool (tool's life time) (pcs)
Time taken = Time for change tool (second)
Tool change unit is sec/pc
  • Processing Capacity
Processing Capacity = Working Time / (MCT+Tool Change)

Purpose of Production Capcaity Sheet
  1. Knowing the maximum capacity that can be produced for each machine in the production line
  2. Knowing the bottle neck machine

Standardized Work

What is Standardized Work?

Standardized work is one of the most powerful but least used lean tools. By documenting the current best practice, standardized work forms the baseline for kaizen or continuous improvement. As the standard is improved, the new standard becomes the baseline for further improvements, and so on. Improving standardized work is a never-ending process.
(lean.org)

In my training about Standardized Work, SW means :
"Standardized Work is a tool to make quality products, based on operator movement, that is arranged with appropriate sequence without MUDA (non added value)"
Standardized Work's spirit is a TOOL
so that the function can be equated with other tools such as jig, mould, torque, impact etc.
Without Standardized Work we could not make a quality product

PURPOSE OF STANDARDIZED WORK
1. Describe the method of production to make quality product with safe, effective and efficient
By implementing SW, employees will maintain production, quality, and safe working environment.
2. First step to KAIZEN (improvement).
Standardized Work is the basic foundation for improvement (KAIZEN) and to evaluate and find MUDA, MURA, & MURI.
There will be no improvement without standardized work.

Basically, standardized work consists of three elements:
  • Takt time, which is the rate at which products must be made in a process to meet customer demand.
  • The precise work sequence in which an operator performs tasks within takt time.
  • The standard inventory, including units in machines, required to keep the process operating smoothly.
There are 3 +1 Sheet in standardized work :
1) Production capacity sheet PCS
2) Standardized work combination table SWCT
3) Standardized work chart SWC
4) Standardized Work Instruction Sheet SWIS
